Birati is a neighbourhood in the north Dumdum municipality area, in the North 24 Parganas district in West Bengal. Situated at the east of Kolkata, beside the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport at Dum Dum, this area is considered to be a part of Greater Kolkata or KMA. The KMDA is the planning and development authority for this locality. Birati is bordered by the Jessore Road in the east, Nimta in the west, New Barrackpore in the north, and Durganagar in the south. Connectivity Birati falls on the Sealdah-Bangaon railway line which connects this area with various key regions around, such as Barasat, Habra, Basirhat, Hasnabad, Bongaon, and Kolkata. The International Airport lies in close proximity to this area. Belghoria Expressway, popularly referred to as the Delhi Road, connects Jessore Road (NH 34), at east near the Airport and NH 6/NH 2 at west near Bally at Hooghly district. The recently inaugurated Birati Flyover at Birati Station, which has been named Manik Bandopadhyay Setu, links the east and west part of the Madhusudan Banerjee Road, the main road of Birati. It has, thus, opened a much-awaited route for buses and heavy transports. Bus service is readily available in this area, with a wide network of buses plying to and through this area. Being close to the Dum Dum junction also allows the local residents to use the metro rail service.Real estate The real estate market is thriving well in this locality, with many notable builders initiating their projects here. Social infrastructureThe prominent educational institutions of this area include Birati Boys High School, Birati Mahajati Balika Vidyamandir, Sri Aurobindo Siksha Sadan, Uttar Dum Dum Vidyapith, Khalisha Kota High School, Sarat Bose Academy, Birati Vidyalaya, National English School, Nivedita English School, Dr. Annie Besant Institute are the prime higher secondary schools here. It also hosts a fair number of government owned and privately run primary and kindergarten schools such as Sudhindranath Sishu Vidyalaya, Uttarayan Sishu Vidyayatan, KidZee, etc. The only college in Birati is the Mrilalini Dutta Mahavidyapith, popularly known as the Birati College. The finest hospitals that can accessed from this locality include North Dum Dum Municipality Hospital, Phoenix Hospital and Diagnostic Centre Pvt. Ltd., Dr. B.K. Memorial Hospital, and few others. Allahabad Bank, HDFC Bank, IDBI Bank, Bandhan Bank, State Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, and a few other banks serve this locality.
