One of the toniest localities of suburban Mumbai, Bandra is home to some of the famous Bollywood and cricket personalities. The name of Bandra is believed to have been derived from the Urdu word "Bandar" meaning port or harbour. The area was ruled by the Silhara Dynasty in the 12th century and was originally a tiny fishing village inhabited by the Kolis. The British East India Company later acquired the area and turned it into the Queen of Suburbs.
